Paul B. Candies, 72, died July 21, 2013, life long resident of Des Allemands, LA.

"Paul was a true southern gentleman and one of the greatest car owners ever in drag racing," said Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood, a close friend of Candies. "He was very generous and probably helped more people than any one individual in our sport. Paul’s passion for drag racing and his influence on the sport was extraordinary. He defined Nitro racing in the 70’s and 80’s and contributed to drag racing on every level. He is a true legend of our industry whose impact and legacy will forever be part of drag racing."

“(Paul) was an excellent man and had a pure love for this sport as much as anyone who has ever been out here," said Mark Oswald, who drove for the Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes team for 11 years including the 1984 championship season in Funny Car. "He meant everything to my career. He was just a guy working on his own race car when I attracted his attention and he gave me the opportunity to drive a first-class racecar. He was always behind you 100 percent and everything was positive."
